What to gather before tax season

Tax season doesn’t start in March. It starts the afternoon your bookkeeper1 asks for a bank statement and you realize it’s in a drawer, an old email, or an account you stopped using in June. Here’s the list, with the reason behind each item, so you only have to gather it once.

Start with the money in and out

Pull a statement for every account the business touches: checking, savings, credit cards, and the PayPal or Stripe balance you forgot about. Download all twelve months. Banks only keep online statements for so long, and rebuilding a missing month from memory is how mistakes get in.

If you’ve mixed personal and business spending, say so now. Highlight the personal charges, or just tell us which card they’re on. Sorting that out later costs more time than sorting it out today. If the year is already a tangle, here is how we catch up a messy year of books2.

Then the paperwork people forget

Last year’s return, so the carryover numbers match. Any 1099s you’ve received. A list of the contractors you paid enough to need a 1099, with legal names and addresses. A signed W-9 for each one saves you a week of chasing in January.

Rules change, and your preparer has the final say on what applies to you. Treat this as the gathering list, not tax advice.

Don’t skip the big purchases

Bought a vehicle, a laptop or equipment this year? Keep the invoice and the date it went into use. Your preparer will ask for both, usually in a hurry.

The full post runs 1,000 words.

An excerpt from a made-up bookkeeping firm’s blog, with the headings and the meta description we’d deliver. The full-length version holds as many words as the 4-day, $299 package allows.

SEO-aware, with no ranking promises

We write posts a reader can skim and still finish, built around the focus keyword you give us. Whether a search engine puts them anywhere depends on your site, your competition and time. Anyone who promises you a position is guessing.

We write for the person who’ll read it. It happens to suit search engines as well.

The focus keyword is yours to pick

A focus keyword is the phrase you’d like the post to be found for. Choose it with whatever tool you already use (or your own sense of what customers type). We write around it. We don’t run keyword research, because that’s a different job with different software. If you’re not sure which to choose, say so in the brief and we’ll tell you what we’d test, without charging for a report.

Who writes it

Derrick Wesson and our writers write and edit these. If we use AI tools for research, outlines or editing, we check the result ourselves. Our AI-use page says exactly how.

What to have ready

You’ll send these through the brief form after you pay. Nothing needs to go in before checkout.

  • The focus keyword for each post.
  • Who’s searching it, and what they want when they do.
  • Your site address, plus two or three pages the posts should link to.
  • Posts from other sites you’d like yours to stand next to.
  • Facts, numbers, quotes and sources we should use. Anything we can’t verify, tell us.
  • Words and claims to avoid.
  • For the cluster: the main topic and the page it supports.

What a post package doesn’t include

  • Keyword research tools.
  • Images.
  • Uploading or formatting in your CMS.
  • Link building.
  • Rankings, traffic or leads.
  • Fact-checking your claims.
  • If you run a health, finance or legal business, you approve every claim before it goes live.

Questions about SEO content

Do you do keyword research?
No. You pick the focus keyword and we write around it. Research tools and the time to use them are a separate job. A package that includes it will say so.
Will the post rank?
We can’t say. We write a good post around your keyword. Where it lands depends on your site, your competition and time.
Do you use AI to write these?
Same as everywhere: see the AI-use page.
Do you upload the posts for us?
No. We deliver a document with the headings and meta description marked. Uploading, images and formatting are yours.
